Cricut Engraving Tool: Here Is How You Can Use It.

If you want to engrave soft metals, Acrylic, leather, paper, or plastic, the Cricut engraving tool is something you need to know. After all, this tool can engrave with the Cricut Maker machine efficiently. Those new to the tool can find this guide helpful, as we will thoroughly cover all sorts of information about this fantastic tool. Let’s start understanding by taking a project (keychain) as an example.

Engraving Your First Project Via Cricut Engraving Tool

Step 1

Open up a new canvas in Cricut Design Space and insert or upload your favorite image. Now, you need to change the lines from cut lines to engrave lines. For this, go and select the image and then change the line type (you can do it in the drop-down menu).

Step 2

Once you change the line type to engraving, you will find that the engraving lines show up automatically as the outline of each stroke instead of a solid filled-in line. Though the Engraving tip doesn’t fill in broad strokes or space, you can minimize the effect of thicker lines with multiple close-together lines. Make sure to size your design to fit your material. Click the green “Make it” button (it can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the screen).

Note: In case your design includes text, you can mirror the design at this point. It allows the design to be engraved into the keychain’s backside and show through the top’s smooth surface.

Step 3

Place the engraving tip into the “B” carrier of the maker and ensure to move the white star wheels to the roller bar’s far right.

Step 4

The next step is peeling the protective paper coating off the side of the acrylic blank. Place the blank and keep the paper side down in the StrongGrip mat’s center. Now, use painter’s tape along the Acrylic’s edge to secure it to the mat.

Step 5

Move to material settings and select Acrylic ( thickness 2 mm) in the Design space. And then begin engraving. You may see the tool lifting and spinning several times during the process; this is quite normal. It is done at regular intervals just to prevent the tool from overheating and mitigate wear.

Step 6

Remove excess acrylic dust or debris by using a lint roller. It would help if you also cleaned off any remaining dust in and around your machine with the help of a soft cloth or compressed air. Also, remove the protective paper from the acrylic blank’s other side.

Note: Ensure to dust toward the machine’s outside instead of through/into the machine.

Step 7

Use a pair of jump rings and jewelry pliers to turn your engraved acrylic blank into a keychain.

Step 8

Utilize pliers to attach the keychain hardware, and your first project is ready.
